दोहा
श्रीगुरु चरण सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुर सुधारी
बराणु रघुवर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि




Meaning

After cleansing the mirror of my mind 

with the pollen dust of holy Guru's lotus feet.I

profess the pure, unattained glory of Shri Raghuvar  

which bestows the four fruits of the life(Dharma, artha, kama and moksha).

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन कुमार

बल बुधि विद्या देहु मोहि, हरहु कलेश विकार

Fully aware of the deficiency of my intelligence
 I concentrate my attention on Pavan Kumar 
and humbly ask for strength, intelligence and
 true knowledge to relieve me of all blemishes causing pain

चौपाई

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥१॥

Victory to thee, O'Hanuman! Ocean of Wisdom-All

hail to you O'Kapisa! (fountain-head of power,wisdom

and (Shiva-Shakti) You illuminate all the three worlds

(Entire cosmos) with your glory.

राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा
अंजनि पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥२॥

You are the divine messenger of Shri Ram. The

repository of immeasurable strength, though known

only as Son of Pavan (Wind), born of Anjani.

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी

कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥३॥

With Limbs as sturdy as Vajra (The mace of God Indra)

you are valiant and brave. On you attends good Sense

and Wisdom. You dispel the darkness of evil thoughts.

कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा

कानन कुंडल कुँचित केसा॥४॥

Your physique is beautiful golden coloured and your dress

is pretty. You wear ear rings and have long curly hair.

हाथ बज्र अरु ध्वजा बिराजे

काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजे॥५॥

You carry in your hand a lightening bolt along with a victory

(kesari) flag and wear the sacred thread on your shoulder.

शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन

तेज प्रताप महा जगवंदन॥६॥

As a descendant of Lord Sankar, you are a comfort and pride

of Shri Kesari. With the lustre of your Vast Sway, you are

propitiated all over the universe.

विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर

राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥७॥

You are the repository of learning, virtuous and fully accomplished

always keen to carryout the behest's of Shri RAM. 

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया

राम लखन सीता मनबसिया॥८॥

You are an ardent listener, always so keen to listen to the

Ram Lakhan Sita man Basiya narration of Shri Ram's Life Stories.

Your heart is filled with what Shri Ram stood for. You therefore always 

dwell in the hearts if Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita.

सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहि दिखावा

विकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥९॥

You appeared before Sita in a Diminutive form and spoke to

her in humility. You assumed an awesome form and struck

terror by setting Lanka on fire.

भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे

रामचंद्र के काज सवाँरे॥१०॥

With over-whelming might you destroyed the Asuras

(demons) and performed all tasks assigned to you by Shri Ram

with great skill.

लाय सजीवन लखन जियाए

श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाए॥११॥

You brought Sanjivan (A herb that revives life) and restored

Lakshman back to life, Shri Raghuvir (Shri Ram) cheerfully

embraced you with his heart full of joy.

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई

तुम मम प्रिय भरत-हि सम भाई॥१२॥

Shri Raghupati (Shri Ram) lustily extolled your excellence and

i said: "You are as dear to me as my own brother Bharat."

सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावै

अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावै॥१३॥

Thousands of living beings are chanting hymns of your glories;

 saying thus, Shri Ram warmly hugged him (Shri Hanuman).

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा

नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥१४॥

When prophets like Sanka, even the Sage like Lord Brahma,

the great hermit Narad himself, Goddess Saraswati and Ahisha

(one of immeasurable dimensions).

जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते

कवि कोविद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥१५॥

Even Yamraj (God of Death) Kuber (God of Wealth) and the

Digpals (deputies guarding the four corners of the Universe)

have been vying with one another in offering homage to your

glories. How then, can a mere poet give adequate expression

of your super excellence.

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहि कीन्हा

राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥१६॥

You rendered a great service to Sugriv. You united him with

Shri Ram and he installed him on the Royal Throne.

तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषण माना

लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना॥१७॥

By heeding your advice, Vibhishan became Lord of Lanka.

This is known all over the Universe.

जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू

लिल्यो ताहि मधुर फ़ल जानू॥१८॥

On your own you dashed upon the Sun, which is at a fabulous

distance of thousands of miles, thinking it to be a sweet

luscious fruit.

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माही

जलधि लाँघि गए अचरज नाही॥१९॥

Carrying the Lord's Signet Ring in your mouth, there is

hardly any wonder that you easily leapt across the ocean.

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते

सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥२०॥

The burden of all difficult tasks of the world become light

with your kind grace.

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे

होत ना आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥२१॥

You are the sentry at the door of Shri Ram's Divine Abode.

No one can enter it without your permission,

सब सुख लहैं तुम्हारी सरना

तुम रक्षक काहु को डरना॥२२॥

All comforts of the world lie at your feet. The devotees enjoy all

divine pleasures and feel fearless under your benign Protection.

आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै

तीनों लोक हाँक तै कापै॥२३॥

You alone are befitted to carry your own splendid valour. All the

three worlds (entire universe) tremor at your thunderous call.

भूत पिशाच निकट नहि आवै

महावीर जब नाम सुनावै॥२४॥

All the ghosts, demons and evil forces keep away, with the

Mahavir jab naam sunavai sheer mention of your great name, O'Mahaveer!!

नासै रोग हरे सब पीरा

जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥२५॥

All diseases, pain and suffering disappear on reciting regularly

Shri Hanuman's holy name.

संकट तै हनुमान छुडावै

मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै॥२६॥

Those who remember Shri Hanuman in thought, words and deeds

with Sincerity and Faith, are rescued from all crises in life.

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा

तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा॥२७॥

All who hail, worship and have faith in Shri Ram as the Supreme

Lord and the king of penance. You make all their difficult tasks

very easy.

और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै

सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥२८॥

Whosoever comes to you for fulfillment of any desire with faith

and sincerity, Will he alone secure the imperishable fruit of

human life.

चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा

है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥२९॥

All through the four ages your magnificent glory is acclaimed far

and wide. Your fame is Radiantly acclaimed all over the Cosmos.

साधु संत के तुम रखवारे

असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥३०॥

You are Saviour and the guardian angel of Saints and Sages and

destroy all Demons. You are the angelic darling of Shri Ram.

अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता

अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥३१॥

You can grant to any one, any yogic power of Eight Siddhis

(power to become light and heavy at will) and Nine Nidhis

(Riches,comfort,power,prestige,fame,sweet relationship etc.)

This boon has been conferred upon you by Mother Janki.

राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा

सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥३२॥

You possess the power of devotion to Shri Ram. In all rebirths

you will always remain Shri Raghupati's most dedicated disciple.

तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै

जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥३३॥

Through hymns sung in devotion to you, one can find Shri Ram

and become free from sufferings of several births.

अंतकाल रघुवरपुर जाई

जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई॥३४॥

If at the time of death one enters the Divine Abode of Shri Ram,
Jahan janam Hari-Bakht Kahayee thereafter in all future births he is born as the Lord's devotee.

और देवता चित्त ना धरई

हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥३५॥

One need not entertain any other deity for Propitiation, as

devotion of Shri Hanuman alone can give all happiness.

संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा

जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥३६॥

One is freed from all the sufferings and ill fated contingencies of

rebirths in the world. One who adores and remembers Shri Hanuman.

जै जै जै हनुमान गुसाईँ

कृपा करहु गुरु देव की नाई॥३७॥

Hail, Hail, Hail, Shri Hanuman, Lord of senses. Let your victory

over the evil be firm and final. Bless me in the capacity as my

supreme guru (teacher).

जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई

छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥३८॥

One who recites Chalisa one hundred times, becomes free from the

 bondage of life and death and enjoys the highest bliss at last.

जो यह पढ़े हनुमान चालीसा

होय सिद्ध साखी गौरीसा॥३९॥

All those who recite Hanuman Chalisa (The forty Chaupais)

regularly are sure to be benedicted. Such is the evidence of no less a

witness as Bhagwan Sankar.

तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा

कीजै नाथ हृदय मह डेरा॥४०॥

Tulsidas as a bonded slave of the Divine Master, stays perpetually at

his feet, he prays "Oh Lord! You enshrine within my heart & soul."

दोहा

पवन तनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप।

राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥

Oh! conqueror of the Wind, Destroyer of all miseries, you are a

symbol of Auspiciousness. Along with Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita,

reside in my heart. Oh! King of Gods.

Hanuman Chalisa is written in the refined Avadhi language.  It consists of forty three verses where two are introductory dohas,  forty Chaupais and one doha in the end.The Chalisa portraits Hanuman's knowledge,  his Bhakti(devotion) to Lord Sri Rama.  In the concluding doha he prays Lord Hanuman to reside in the heart,  along with Sri Rama,  Lakshman and Sita.

GOSWAMI TULSIDAS:

Tulsidas (1532-1623) was a great Hindu poet,  saint and philosopher renowned for his devotion for the God Sri Rama.  He composed the epic Ramcharitmanas from the sanskrit Ramayan in the vernacular Avadhi.  Tulsidas lived in the city of Varanasi.  The Tulsi ghat in Varanasi was named after him.  He founded the Sankatmochan temple of Hanuman in Varanasi.  He has been acclaimed as a great poet in Hindi(indian) and world literature.

STORY OF HANUMAN CHALISA:

Once Tulsidas met the Emperor Akbar in Delhi after having a darshan of God Sri Rama in Gokul,  the birthplace of God Sri Krishna. The Emperor challenged Tulsidas to show Sri Rama to him. When Tulsidas replied that it was impossible without true devotion to Rama,  he was imprisoned.  In prison,  Tulsidas wrote the beautiful verses of Hanuman Chalisa.

When he completed the Hanuman chalisa in prison,  an army of monkeys menaced the Delhi city.  The Emperor unsuccessfully tried to control the monkeys with his forces.  Finally,  Akbar realised that the monkey menace was a manifestation of the wrath of Lord Hanuman.  Then the Emperor released Tulsidas and the monkeys went away.

Hanuman Chalisa Parayana Maha yagnam Guinnese world record:

The seer of Avadhoota Datta Peetham Mysore,  Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamiji has set Guinness world record at Tenali (A.P) for "leading most people chanting Hanuman Chalisa at a single venue for global peace," in which 1,28,913 devotees chanted Hanuman Chalisa 27 times.  The earlier record was 1.08.000 devotees.
